The sudden shutdown of PM Law has left many clients and legal professionals facing disruption, confusion, and urgent unanswered questions.

As reported by the Law Gazette, the firm’s closure happened with little warning, with offices reportedly closing overnight and staff instructed to clear their desks and leave. For many clients in the middle of property transactions, litigation, and other legal matters, the news has understandably caused significant concern.

The regulator, Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), has since provided an update on what happens next for affected clients and their files.

What the SRA Has Said About Client Files

In its latest guidance, the SRA explained that clients may not necessarily need their full file to instruct a new solicitor straight away. It advises:

  • Gathering together all communications and documents already received
  • Making a note of any other parties or lawyers involved in the matter

This information may be enough for a new lawyer to pick up the case and move things forward.

Where files can be located and identified, the SRA’s intervention agents (solicitors working on its behalf) will contact clients to ask what they would like done with their paperwork. However, due to the large volume of files expected, this process may take time, with urgent matters being prioritised.
