I cannot express enough gratitude to Lloyd and Hannah at Attwells Lawyers for their exceptional support in my case. After facing discrimination from my company and feeling pushed out after raising concerns with HR, I turned to them for help. From the very first consultation, their team was empathetic, professional, and dedicated to my case. They guided me through the entire process and fought tirelessly on my behalf, ultimately helping me secure a settlement agreement. Their expertise in employment law was evident, and they always kept me informed and involved. Lloyd Clarke

Partner & Solicitor

Head of Employment & Business Disputes

I am a Partner of the firm and head up Attwells’ Employment Law Department, a Legal 500 ranked legal department. I also regularly undertake work in the areas of business disputes and civil litigation.

I advise employers, employees, independent contractors, businesses and individuals in contentious and non-contentious matters in both the Employment Tribunal and County Court.

A typical week for me would involve advising upon settlement agreements, negotiating exit packages for senior executives, drafting claims and defences to Employment Tribunal or County Court proceedings (such as those relating to unfair dismissal, discrimination, breach of contract, negligence etc), contracts of employment, staff handbooks and other HR documentation, advising on grievance and disciplinary proceedings, TUPE transfers, and poor performance/sickness absence.

Alongside my general offering, I specialise in advising those operating in a small handful of key sectors, including care, estate agency, insurance, and IR35.

I have provided seminars on legal issues affecting the care sector to members of both Suffolk Care Association and Essex Care Association, in addition to talks at a national level. I have also delivered talks across East Anglia and London to estate agents on key legal requirements for their business, in conjunction with NAEA Propertymark.

Examples of the work Lloyd has done or been involved in

Lloyd advised a senior broker in the Lloyds of London market, who had been the victim of age discrimination. Lloyd entered into lengthy negotiations on his behalf with his employer before eventually agreeing a substantial settlement package in excess of £500,000, a package which also preserved valuable Restricted Stock Units.

Lloyd advised a director and shareholder of a facilities support business who faced a claim from a previous business partner for 50% of the total issued share capital in the business, which they valued in excess of £600,000. Lloyd entered into correspondence with the opponent, undermining those arguments made on their behalf and involving complex legal submissions, culminating in a settlement representing just a fraction of that sum claimed at the outset.

Lloyd, advising a leading 5G network service provider, drafted and submitted a robust defence to an Employment Tribunal claim made by a former employee and valued at £80,000. The former employee alleged sex and age discrimination, sexual harassment, constructive dismissal, victimisation and whistleblowing. Following submissions made by Lloyd, the claim was withdrawn by the Claimant, bringing the matter to a swift close.

Lloyd advised the CFO of a data analytics and AI solutions provider after he was put at risk of redundancy with no due process undertaken. Arguing there was no genuine redundancy situation, he successfully negotiated a settlement package in excess of £85,000, also allowing for our client to secure a retention bonus (notwithstanding its payment date fell after the termination date) and retention of a valuable shareholding within the business.
